Chapter 6 | The Radley House

In chapter six, Jem, Dill, and Scout had gone out at night to sneak around the Radley house. They wanted to peak in through the windows to see if they could see Boo Radley and what was inside of the house. This took guts, and they all were willing to do it, though Scout was chickening out, she had been nervous and kept telling them to turn back. Though she still continued with them. They were doing it this night, because Dill was leaving the next day, so he had wanted to have fun with them before he had to leave Maycomb. When they had reached the house, they had gone from the backyard gate to get onto the Radley property. They had looked inside a window and barely saw anything, so they had come back around, and that was when Scout and the other two saw a shadow coming towards them. The shadow had shot a bullet to kind of scare them. They all immediately ran as far as they could go. Jem had got his pants stuck on a metal fence, and left it there, because he did not want to get caught.

When the three of them got back around there house, they saw a lot of people around the Radley house, including Dill's aunt and Atticus. The three had gone to all the people. At this part of the book I was getting kind of angry, because Jem had gone right to the people with no pants on, so I was thinking that he could get caught easily, if Mr. Radley saw that Jem was missing his pants, and later he finds a pair of pants, he would know right away that Jem had gone onto his property. Jem could've gone home and put on another pair of pants, so people would be less suspicious and would've have not had the awkward conversation that they had about poker to their dad and Dill's aunt. At the end of the chapter Jem and Scout were sleeping in their room, when Jem had gotten up and Scout had asked where he was going, he then replied that he had to get back his pants, because he promised his father that he'd bring them back. He respected his father a lot, and didn't want to lie to him. It was very risky to go back to the house to retrieve his pants, because Mr. Nathan Radley had said if someone stepped on his land again he'd shoot the person, doesn't matter who it is. Jem goes and comes back safe and sound and Scout is relieved he is safe.
