Scout and Jem are finding more stuff in the knot hole of the tree. First they found a ball of grey twine. Jem said that they should take it, but Scout said that it might be Cunningham's hiding spot because he goes down there every recess and hides things. They decided to leave it there for a few days. It was still there after a couple of days, so they took it. The second thing that they found were two bars of soap with a carved boy in one of them and a carved girl in the other. They both realized that the carved figures was them and they both freaked out a little bit. They thought of Mr. Avery because he is the one who carves things. The third thing that they found was a medal and the fourth thing was a pocket watch on a chain with a knife. Scout said it was their biggest prize. There could be several people putting things in the knot hole of the tree, or it could be one person. Scout and Jem decide to write a letter to who was leaving stuff in the knot hole of the tree. When they put it in the tree, the next day they saw that the hole was filled with cement. Jem asked Mr. Radley why it was filled with cement and he said the tree was dying. He said that you put cement in trees when they are sick.
Jem told Scout about what happened when he went to go get his pants. Jem said that he saw his pants folded on the fence. He said it was like someone knew he was going to come back to get them. He also said that they were stitched up for him because his pants ripped when his pants got caught on the fence. Jem feels like he should tell Atticus, but he doesn't want to. This has been on his mind for awhile now and he can't get it out of his head. He can't tell Atticus because he doesn't want to let Atticus down. If he tells Atticus, he will let him down and he will probably let himself down too. He will also get a bad punishment. He cried at the end of the chapter when they were going inside. He is going crazy over this and wants to tell Atticus, but Jem can't.
