Chapter 12

In chapter 12 we discover that Jem is 12 years old(how ironic) and that along with age he is maturing.  Scout went to Calpurnia and asked her what was wrong  with him but Calpurnia told her he was maturing. Summer had also come but Dill  didn't, he had stayed in Meridian to build a fishing boat with his new father! Scout was happy for him but that meant he wouldn't be with her and that upset ted her a lot. Atticus had left for two weeks and Calpurnia had the idea to bring Jem and Scout to the church she went to. Scout accepted and Calpurnia was lets saw was a little extra. She bathed Jem and Scout and was sure they looked perfect for church. they went to church and met Lula who didn't want them in here because they were white. However, Calpurnia's son Reverend Syker invited them over and greeted them. the church was not in the best state. They had a different way of running the church and that confused Scout. She was very curious and got even more curious when Tom Robinson's name was mentioned. She had doubts and it seems that for the first time she discovered who had accused Tom and why they had accused him.

One interesting scene of the chapter was when they were collecting money for Helen, Tom's wife. Every member of the church gave a dime for the collect but they needed to have at least 10 dollars (close to 100 dollars today). They need that money because Helen had three little kids she had to feed and take care of but she didn't have a job. She didn't have a job because no one wanted to have anything to do with Tom or his family, so no one hired her. It took some time but the church collected 10 dollars. After mass Scout asked what tom had done and who was accusing him and Calpurnia said he had been accused of raping a daughter of Mr. Edwells. Scout really didn't ask more of Tom. She and Jem however asked her why she had talked that way in church and Calpurnia said that it was the way everyone talked and that the folks did like people knowing more than them. She also said that she taught her son to read and said they didnt have books because the people barely new how to read.

  1. Jem is maturing and Dill is gone, so Scout would get lonely and go to Calpurnia. I also think that the scene where they had to collect money was interesting because they wanted everyone to donate to reach 10 dollars, so Helen can take care of the kids. Jem and Scout were curious at the end of church. Good job on your blog post.
