The Finches

In chapter 9 we finally met Aunt Alexandra and Francis. Aunt Alexandra and Scout don't really get along because Alexandra wants to make Scout wear dresses and to behave like a lady so she can be a beam of light to Atticus but Scout does not quite agree. Scout also despises Francis because he is an annoying child that hides behind his grandmothers skirt when he gets in trouble. Something to due with Francis happened in chapter 9. We discover that Aunt Alexandra and Francis don't agree on the fact that Atticus is defending an African American and said that that is ruining the family name. And Francis started to call Atticus a n****-lover and Scout got very mad and punched Francis in the face which to be honest he deserved. Aunt Alexandra and Uncle Jack came into the scene and Scout got into trouble and was frustrated because Uncle Jack didn't mind asking for her part of the story. And, when they get home Scout explains to Uncle Jack was truly happened and makes him promise that he won't tell Atticus what truly happened that night. Also, during bed time Scout goes down stairs and sees Uncle Jack and Atticus talking and listens. They talk about the case/Tom Robinson and about Scout. We get a sense that Tom will be against the Edwells in the case. Maybe he was accused of raping a friend of the Edwells or one of the female Edwells.

In this chapter we discover that even the family of Atticus does not support the idea of him defending Tom. However, he still does because its the right thing to do and I guess Alexandra and the other finches don't get that. Scout also seems a little bit confused, no one wants him to defend Tom plus he will probably loss because the jury is all white. And yes other white lawyers "defended" African Americans but do not try because they had no chance against the jury and because they don't care if the African American is put to death but the difference between them and Atticus is that Atticus will actually try. the whole town and his family(most of the family) is against it but he will do it because if he doesn't he wouldn't be able to make his kids obey him or hold his head in town. We get the idea that most of the white society don't believe African Americans are equal to them which leads to racism.

  1. I like how your own personal voice came out in this blog post like when you put defended in "s. I also agree with you on this because the lawyers would not try as you said. Also even if the lawyer knew what the right thing to do was and wanted to do it per pressure would be very strong.
